LEAD PAINT MANAGEMENT
Many of the pigments used in paints are based on metals. The use of metal based pigments escalated during the industrial revolution and with the introduction of modern synthetic pigment and manufactured paint industries it continues to the present day.
Unfortunately, some of the metals used in manufacture are hazardous and can cause great harm to the health of humans and other living things. The most common and problematic being lead.
Since 2010, Australia has prohibited all uses of lead compounds and pigments in paints. However, lead based paint is present on many older structures.
Workers involved in the removal and preparation of old lead based paints are at risk of becoming exposed to any hazardous materials that may be present. Worker monitoring, training and medical surveillance as well as environmental protection measures are the key to managing these high risk projects successfully.
